Adjusting our view

July 1, 2013

Here’s a great idea…
“Men are disturbed not by things, but the views which they take of them.”
–Epictetus, quoted in Managing Stress.

In other words…
The difference between languishing and flourishing depends on how we choose to see our circumstances. Are we glad for new experiences even when they are challenging or painful? Or do we complain that life is not delivering the future we dreamed of? We can make a conscious decision to embrace the experience and its lessons and thereby not become disturbed or discouraged when life sends us the unexpected.

Here’s how you can use this idea to have a better life…
Next time an event threatens to upend your hopes, brace yourself. Don’t let your mind drop into despair and gloom. Consider the ways that this “unhappy” event can be seen differently. Choose a positive perspective.
