Creating your path to happiness

June 13, 2013

Here’s a great idea…
“You have the power within you to figure out what inspires you, what makes you laugh, or what gives you hope, and to cultivate those emotions…This can help you optimize your life by setting up moments of genuine positivity for yourself. Do not underestimate the benefits of doing this. These moments can help you to build your own personal and social resources that can be drawn upon in the future.”
–Algoe and Fredrickson as quoted by Martin Seligman in his book, Flourish

In other words…
We may think that we can only be happy when things are going right. Since we don’t have much control over our circumstances, we assume that we have little control over what we feel. This isn’t true. While we may not always be able to change our circumstances, we can choose to find the positive in our lives. We can always find reasons to be positive!

Here’s how you can use this idea to have a better life…
Notice what inspires you, what makes you laugh, what gives you hope. Look for patterns. Do you love visual experiences? Are you lifted by certain kinds of music? Are you challenged by a particular type of project? Use this knowledge to create a more positive life.
