The attitude of gratitude

June 7, 2013

Here’s a great idea…
“Times that challenge us physically, emotionally, and spiritually may make it almost impossible for us to feel grateful. Yet, we can decide to live gratefully, courageously open to life in all its fullness. By living the gratefulness we don’t feel, we begin to feel the gratefulness we live.”
–David Steindl-Rast (as quoted in Robert Emmons’s Thanks! pp. 180-181)

In other words…
Gratitude is much more than just a feeling. It is also an attitude and a way of life. It is a choice to see the world in a positive, appreciative way. The big surprise is that everything in life can be good when we look for the good in all things. We can learn to understand other points of view from disagreements. We can learn patience and compassion from medical problems. We can see life as a gift.

Here’s how you can use this idea to have a better life…
How can you interpret life as a gift? What events in your life are you tempted to interpret in negative ways? Can you see a way to find the benefits in them? Also, what are the good things in your life that deserve more attention and appreciation?
