Don’t feed the monsters

July 31, 2012

Here’s a great idea…

In his book, Finding Flow, Mihaly Czikszentmihaly says, “The effect of physical pain, of a monetary loss, of a social snub depends on how much attention we pay to it, how much room we allow for it in consciousness. The more psychic energy we invest in a painful event, the more real it becomes.” (p. 128)

In other words…

One of the surprising discoveries of research is that the way we think about our experiences makes a big difference in the quality of our lives. The more we dwell on the negative, the more influence it will have on us. When we choose to be grateful for the good we choose to have better lives.

Here’s how you can use this idea to have a better life…

Next time you are tempted to dwell on the problems and disappointments in your life, stop. Tame that monster of negativity. Make plans to solve the problem. Or turn your thoughts to the good. You improve your life as you choose to manage the negative and appreciate the positive.
