The emotion that connects

June 14, 2012

Here’s a great idea…

In their book, How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, Patricia Love and Steven Stosny say, “Contrary to popular belief, the most important of all attachment emotions is not love, it’s compassion…Compassion makes us sensitive to the individuality, depth, and vulnerability of loved ones.” (p. 114)

In other words…

Compassion helps us enter our partners’ worlds. It opens our minds and hearts to their needs, preferences, struggles, and hopes. It binds our hearts together. When we take the time to acknowledge and appreciate what is going on in their lives, we will be able to connect to our partners on a deeper level.

Here’s how you can use this idea to have a better life…

This week, listen carefully to your partner. Take time to understand and empathize with his or her daily joys and challenges.
