Listening is an act of love

September 7, 2011

A Great Idea…

“Everybody wants to be valued and appreciated. And nothing fosters such goodwill as your ability to pay attention to the details of another person’s life.” (John Gottman, Ph.D., marriage researcher, in his book The Relationship Cure, p. 198)

In Other Words…

When we take an active interest in our partners’ lives, we are sending them powerful messages. We are telling them that we value them, love them, and want to be a part of their lives. When we take an interest in what is going on in their world and what’s important to them, it builds strong bonds. It shows them how important they are to us. We should be life-long students in the subject of our partners.

How This Applies to You…

Make a few minutes today to talk to your partner and find out something new about him or her. What is she worried about? What is he excited about? Listen to learn.
